SMBMSP, as it’s affectionately known, has been a catalyst for the social media community in the Twin Cities to meet people, grow friendships, and learn from each other since 2008. The organization also has a special place in our hearts — being a direct connection to us making IRL friends after we moved here.
And yet, there’s tension in social media these days, too. Here’s one of the posts we used as inspiration for the discussion…
As a generation that can remember the before times, we have the opportunity to think about the good, bad, and awesome that has come since social media started seeping into our entire lives.
In this episode, we talked about the the social media dilemma and its impact on our daily lives, and how we can reclaim our digital spaces with a human-centric approach. Reclaiming the human side, including through engagement!
Greg suggested liking everyone’s posts with less judgment. Jenny talked about the power of DMs and fostering community and intimacy.
Social media creating real-life friends? Yes, and it continues today. In fact, the upcoming generations are probably finding more connection and “social” value from gaming, metaverse, and social media than we do…
And yes, there are a lot of implications of A.I. We talked about misinformation, the need for education and guardrails, and the big “what’s next” that we’re all feeling when it comes to A.I. and our human lives.
For those of you in attendance, thanks for being such a great crowd!
And a big thank you to Skelly Video Productions for capturing the audio and photos, Jen and Mykl Roventine for organizing and leading SMBMSP so well, and to the sponsors and attendees for helping create such a wonderful opportunity to have a conversation as a community.
